Caring is at the heart of everything we do.

Focused Abdominal Ultrasound in Palliative Care (FASP)

The aim of this 2-day course is to provide candidates with enough theoretical, practical background information and practice in order to perform focused abdominal ultrasound examinations within the palliative care context to aid individual clinician decision making.

The course does NOT aim to produce ultrasonographers but does aim to illustrate how using ultrasound skills in the hospice context can provide useful answers to specific common questions.

  1. Is the urinary bladder full?
  2. Does this patient have ascites?
  3. Is it safe to drain ascites at this point?
  4. Are the intrahepatic biliary ducts grossly dilated?

In addition we will cover the theoretical aspects of conducting an assessment for DVT and also for a pleural effusion.

This course should be of interest to doctors and senior nurses involved in the care of patients in the hospice setting where there is not access to an easily accessible ultrasound assessment service, but where there is access to an ultrasound machine. Candidates are encouraged to bring their own ultrasound machine to the training so they will be able to practice using their own machine.
