European Certificate in Holistic Dementia Care (ECHDC) 2015 (& Northern Ireland Hospice)

The 8-week distance learning European Certificate in  Holistic Dementia Care is aimed specifically at helping healthcare professionals effectively treat this group of      patients and support those who matter to them. The focus of this certificate is to address the needs and challenges of providing palliative and end-of-life care to people with dementia.  Issues addressed will include areas such as symptom management, clinical challenges, ethical dilemmas, communication issues, managing distressing behaviour, with the overall aim being to improve the quality of care in dementia.

European Certificate in Essential Palliative Care (ECEPC). From 2001

This eight week home study course has now been running for seven years and has taught over 1500 Doctors Nurses and other health care professionals from the UK and further a-field. The course aims to meet the need expressed in the National Cancer plan for interdisciplinary, multimedia, easily disseminated teaching on the essentials of palliative care. Examination centres for the bi-annual exam include London, Belfast, Birmingham , Limerick, Dublin and Foyle/Letterkenny.  The CEPC has been Accredited by the Royal college of physicians (50 hours CME), General Practitioners (20 hours CME) and Universities of Surrey and Ulster, and endorsed by Gold Standards Framework, and Professor Mike Richards.

International Certificate in Essential Palliative Care (In collaboration with the Indian Association of Palliative Care)

In February 2008 over 350 Doctors and Nurses completed the programme in the Southern states of India. By the end of 2008 over 1300 Doctors and Nurses should have completed the programme which is being run in June and again in November.  The Certificate Programme has also been run in Nepal (X 4), Kyrgestan (translated into Russian) and is due to be held in Cyprus in the autumn of 2008

Certificate in Essential Palliative care for Allied Health Professionals (with Payne, C.)

A eight week programme based on the above certificate suitable for allied health professionals was piloted in Belfast from April to June 2008, and has been subsequently run in Belfast and Limerick.

District Doctor Training Program 1994-1998

A hospital based three year training program for junior hospital doctors prepaing to work in rural Nepal. The program included Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Ultrasound, Dentistry, Family Planning, Research Community Health and Management 

Care Home Palliative Care Course 2009

A distance learning programme for clinical staff in care homes looking after patients at the end of life. Piloted in the autumn of 2009.  Produced in collaboration with the Gold standards Framework Care Homes programme, the Hospice friendly Hospitals programme, and Age Concern
