Comfort and Care Appeal

Planting the Seeds of Comfort & Care

At Northern Ireland Hospice, we know that sometimes the smallest things bring the greatest comfort. A warm hug, a moment in the garden, a hand to hold. These moments can make all the difference to families facing the hardest of days.

One of the families we had the honour of caring for was Gena Montgomery’s. Gena first came to us for palliative care, never expecting that she would be with us for 13 weeks. She loved her garden and found real joy in flowers, so one day when she was feeling low, we brought a tray of fresh blooms to her bedside. The moment she started creating her own floral arrangement, her face lit up with the biggest smile.

It was a small moment, but for Gena and her family, it meant everything. Enclosed you’ll find Gena’s story, told to us by her husband Hugh and daughters Gail and Dawn. Hospice allowed Gena to live well in the time she had, surrounded by her loved ones.

Whether it was the flower arranging, the nurses dancing in her room, or the comfort of having her pain properly managed, she was cared for as a whole person, not just as a patient.

This is what Hospice care means. But right now, we are facing one of our most challenging years yet. The cost of delivering specialist care is rising every day, and demand for our services continues to grow. More families than ever need us - but without additional support, we may not be able to reach everyone who turns to us for help.

To give you an idea of the costs to run our service:

It costs £188.33 to provide a family member with a course of bereavement support, helping them cope with life after their loved one is gone.

£574.25 could help fund two days of specialist community nursing care, allowing a patient to receive expert support in the comfort of their own home.

Or £988 could help provide a full day of care in our inpatient unit, ensuring a patient receives round-the-clock medical attention, pain
management, and emotional support in a place of warmth and dignity.

Please, if you can, make a donation and help us support more patients, like Gena. Every act of kindness, big or small, helps us continue this vital work.

Your kindness will help us nurture the care and support that families across Northern Ireland depend on.
